A day at the observatory

It might seem as if we are constantly on field trips…and that is partially true!  This Thursday we had a chance to join our 8th graders from “down below” on a field trip to the famous Palomar Mountain Observatory.  The Observatory was built in the 40’s, but is still in operation, it is actually booked every night except for Christmas!  Under the 1000 ton dome is a 530 ton telescope that uses a 200″ mirror to gather light and high tech, liquid-nitrogen cooled cameras to gather data!  We were lucky enough to go into the dome and check it out…we even got to walk on a catwalk along the outside of the dome.  It was amazing!

Thanks to Scott Kardell and Caltech for this trip, and also thanks to the 8th graders (and Mr. Powell) for coming up and visiting us!
